Oooo yes, I love it when this happens: A city wide yard sale! A tiny town about 10 minutes from where I live had a big ol' yard sale and the prices were all next to nothing. I had been getting a bit irritated by all of the high prices I was running into at yard sales. I mean, really, if I wanted to pay half of retail I would just go to the clearance section at the stores. And don't give me that "well, I saw it on ebay for ___ dollars." Well then take the time and sell it on ebay and not at your yard sale! Ok, I am off my high horse now...let's get to the bargains!
I scored this large piece of artwork for $4 from a stylish couple who had moved to L.A. and were back to clear out their storage unit. This kind of artwork typically sells at Bed, Bath, and Beyond for upwards of a hundred bucks so I definitely feel I got a bargain. The hubby liked it too!
The shampoo and the Dan Brown book were 50 cents each.
The cute striped espadrilles were $1 and the shorts were also a buck.
Not too bad, eh?
Question du jour: Have you been running into higher prices at the yard sales?
I still find great bargains but yesterday, I was at a joint yard sale...most likely all sisters, and there was a stack of nice assorted shorts. They were mostly khaki and white. They were all priced 2.50. Not a bad price but I left every pair there (even though they were my size and would have added nicely to my summer outfits). Why did I pass? The prices were written in red on masking tape. Over the RED original price of 2.00 was the new HIGHER price of 2.50 in black. It just ticked me off! I look for prices that are marked DOWN, not UP! How hard could it have been to just make a new price tag? Seeing tags with the prices raised is just poor form!ReplyDelete
Prices are higher everywhere! Yard sales, Craigslist, thrifts. I guess we should have seen it coming. People have been over-exposed to the deals community through media, and think some sap will pay high dollar for their junk. They know about us!ReplyDelete
On a personal note, if I'm selling at a yard sale its because I want that stuff gone. Not because I think my junk is worth a million dollars. Purging my home of things that are essentially just rotting is my reward.
I also worry what these higher prices do to folks who really need the help. Too many people are struggling and would use and appreciate those old deals.
That said, there is always haggling. ;) Turn on that charm!
I completely understand your rant. People also say, "I saw it on 1stdibs for $XXX." It's so tempting to respond, "Then open a store, get accepted onto 1stdibs, pay their hefty monthly fee and sell it there."ReplyDelete
I don't know when people started thinking that they could expect retail prices selling on CL or out of their front yards...but that seems to be the trend.
You got some killer deals on those items, by the way. Good for you!
Yes, some higher prices but occasionally too low of prices (.25 cents for current paperback - score). Like you said, people always think their goodies are worth more than they are.ReplyDelete
I saw a plate at Goodwill for $15, i almost passed out...um you know you got the plate FREE...right Goodwill...who make these prices and who is buying them....NOT MEReplyDelete
Yes! People just think their stuff is so great! But I have seen the reasoning behind that. My man and I are planning on having a garage sale and he wants to sell everything for way too much. I told him that if he prices stuff too high were going to end up with a bunch of junk still, but he won't listen! Ugh, I guess it's more people like him, hahaha!ReplyDelete
I like those espadrilles. I haven't been to many yard sales, so I can't really comment on the prices. Hubby and I are thinking about having one, though. If we do, I'm thinking I'll make the prices reasonable because a little money is better than nothing, amirite?ReplyDelete
Nice finds! I went to some today. I got some nice tops (J Crew, Loft) for $.50 each. But then I've been to some yard sales that are way overpriced and I might as well buy the things new or on eBay. And the thrift store prices are all over the place! No rhyme or reason with some of the items.ReplyDelete
I brought those same shoes at a yard sale last weekend for $1. I love them. Prices are defiantly going up, I saw a pair of used jeans with a price tag of $10 and the brand wasn't great.ReplyDelete
Yes, I just went to one where it was a big one. The prices were high and surprised. A bit junky though.ReplyDelete
Absolutely! I saw a set of three Pyrex mixing bowls at a thrift store for $25. What were they smoking? Even the rummage sales around here are using crazy high prices, like $5 for something that probably doesn't even work.ReplyDelete
